Buckingham Palace grew from Buckingham House, a townhouse bought by George III in 1761, and was remodelled into a palace for Queen Victoria, who made it the official royal London residence in 1837. Its familiar east front, where crowds gather at the balcony, was refaced in Portland stone in 1913.
